I Survived

Today I survived a insane workout with my gym back in Panama. Even though I live in Canada now, I still train with them because they remain such an important part of my life, my stability, my support system.

I love working out.

It helps me physically, yes. But more than anything, it helps me emotionally. It clears my mind. It releases what I’m carrying. It keeps me sane.

At the end of today’s class, my coach said:

“You survived. That was rough… and you survived.”

And I laughed and said:

“Yeah… I survived.”

But then I got stuck on that word.

Survived.

And suddenly, I wasn’t thinking about the workout anymore.

I was thinking about Sean.

Because Sean died.

And with his death came the worst, hardest, most unimaginable thing I have ever had to live through. I have cried until I felt like I had no tears left. I have suffered in a way that only someone who has loved deeply and then lost that love can truly understand.

I live with it every day.

I see it in my children.

I grieve it with my children.

And still…

I survived.

Yes, I survived the death of the love of my life.

I survived the day I thought I would never be able to breathe again.

I survived the mornings when I didn’t want to get out of bed.

I survived looking at my children and having no idea how we were supposed to keep going without their dad.

I survived the pain I was certain would destroy me.

And if I survived that…

Then I can survive anything.

Fucking anything.

There is nothing, absolutely nothing, I cannot face.

No dream too big.

No challenge too difficult.

No life too complicated for me.

Because when a woman survives what once seemed impossible, something inside her changes.

A different kind of strength is born.

Not the kind that comes from ego.

The kind that comes from having walked through pain and made it to the other side.

From a love that still remains.

From hitting rock bottom.

Today I started the day feeling tired.

And I ended it feeling powerful.

God, it feels good to remember that I am capable of anything.

Yo amo entrenar.

Me ayuda físicamente, sí. Pero más que todo, me ayuda emocionalmente. Me ordena la mente. Me descarga el alma. Me mantiene cuerda.

Al terminar la clase, mi coach dijo:

“Sobreviviste. Estaba feo… y sobreviviste.”
