Happiness, His Legacy
September came, and with it came this enormous weight. This immense pain that shakes my soul, my body, and my mind.
Sometimes it comes slowly, and sometimes it hits me hard. It goes back and forth, from good to bad, from light to dark, as the days go by and we get closer to this day.
Today. September 14.
A date I wish I could erase from the calendar.
I was talking to my mother-in-law about how September makes us feel. About how the anniversary of Sean’s death is not something we want to celebrate. There is nothing to celebrate about the day he died.
We just want to celebrate his life.
And as we talked, we started thinking about who he was. His light. His happiness. His energy. How much he loved life.
Sean chose to live life fully.
He lived with passion, excitement, and so much joy. He gave love so freely. He laughed. He got excited about things. But more than anything, he wanted to be with his family.
Places and things were never that important to him. He traveled so much for work, saw so many places, and honestly, he didn’t care that much about being there. He would always rather be home with us.
For Sean, it was never about where he was. It was about who he was with.
And he had this amazing way of bringing his energy everywhere he went and making people around him happy.
And then, right in the middle of a conversation about pain, we realized something.
Anything that brings us joy, that’s where we should be.
That’s where he would want us to be.
In whatever makes us smile. With the people we love. In the moments that make our hearts happy. In the conversations, the laughs, the hugs, the unexpected plans. In anything that reminds us that we are still here, and we are still living.
Because if Sean taught us anything, it was exactly that: to live.
To really live.
To live intensely. Passionately. To not leave for tomorrow the things that can make us happy today. To take every opportunity we have to feel, to love, to discover, to enjoy.
For a long time, I thought honoring him meant talking about him. Keeping his memory alive. Telling the world who he was and how much we loved him.
And yes. It is that too.
But now I understand that there is another beautiful way to honor him:
to be happy.
Because being happy doesn’t mean we love him any less. It doesn’t take away the pain. It doesn’t mean we miss him less or that we have somehow moved on from the life we had with him.
Not at all.
Our happiness can simply be a continuation of the way he lived.
Every time we choose to live, we honor him.
Every time we let ourselves laugh without feeling guilty, we honor him.
Every time we love, travel, celebrate, dream, make plans, or simply enjoy a beautiful moment, we are carrying a little bit of the way he lived with us.
And maybe that’s why, when life puts a choice in front of us, the answer can sometimes be much simpler than we make it:
choose what makes you happy.
Because life is too fragile to live it halfway.
And because if Sean could ask one thing from us, I know it wouldn’t be to spend our lives looking back at the day he died.
He would want us to live the way he did.
With love.
With passion.
With joy.
With excitement.
To take every opportunity this life still gives us.
To live.
And to be happy.
Because that was Sean.
And that will always be his legacy:
to be happy.
Love you forever.

Daba amor a manos llenas.
A vivir intensamente. Apasionadamente.
