Let’s All Be Like Nadia

Today I want to dedicate my blog to a very special person. A woman who inspires me every day. Someone who has been a friend, a mother, a sister, a grandma to my children, and, many times, my feet when I haven’t been able to stand on my own.

Nadia Fahim.

Nadia is sweet, but strong. Kind, but with character. Smart, cautious and incredibly loyal. She genuinely cares about the people around her. She supports you. She protects you. She celebrates your happiness and carries your pain when life gets heavy.

She is your ride or die.

There is something I have learned about families over the years: the woman of the house sets the heart of the home.

When you walk into a home and you can feel the love, when you see a family that genuinely enjoys being together, supports one another and stays united through life, look at the woman at the center of it.

She is the secret.

She creates the warmth. She holds everyone together. She teaches them how to love and care for one another. She is the engine that keeps the whole boat moving forward.

In the Fahim family, that woman is Nadia.

She is the heart of their home, and you can see who she is reflected in the beautiful family she has built around her.

And somehow, she has made room in all of that love for me and my children too.

When I moved to Ottawa, I arrived in a new country trying to build a completely new life. I had my children, my suitcases, a broken heart, and a soul carrying much more than anyone could see.

And then there was Nadia.

She became my shelter. My home away from home. My family.

She has taken care of my children as if they were her own grandchildren. She has opened her home to us so many times that I don’t think my children even understand there is a difference between our house and Nadia’s house. Or maybe they do, and they just like hers better, because that’s Nana’s house.

She has fed us, helped us, listened to me, laughed with me and stood beside me.

She has been my feet when I couldn’t stand. The person I can call when I need help, advice, company, a laugh, or simply a hug. And I really love her hugs.

She has been more than I could ever have dreamed of finding when I moved here.

Some people feel like gifts.

Nadia is one of mine.

A blessing from the sky that somehow found me in Ottawa when I needed family the most.

So today, on her birthday, I don’t only want to tell her how much I love her. I want to celebrate the way she moves through this world.

Because the world needs more Nadias.

More people who show up. Who care without keeping score. Who open their homes and their hearts. Who make others feel loved, safe and like they belong.

At the end of the day, being a good person really is that simple: leave the people you meet a little better than you found them.

Nadia does that.

She is simply a good person.

Let’s all be like Nadia.

Happy birthday, my dear.

Thank you for loving me and my children. Thank you for opening your home, your family and your heart to us.

Thank you for being my family when I needed one.

I love you.
